the cool thing is that the "false prog" tag doesn't necesarily mean good or bad. for instance, crack the skye and de-loused are both false prog but they are awesome albums

it requires a multiple listens. It doesn't flow as well as Leviathan and is not as cohesive. The production is much more pristine, which will bother most fans of their previous work.

However it does have innovative guitar and drum parts, the bass is far more audible, and the vocals sound great (as long as you can get past the Crystal Skull Croon, as I call it).

It's probably not a 5, but I'm hard pressed to think of another album that so flawlessly mixes excellent songwriting, original riffs, lyrics, and vocal lines, and accessability.

This record also shows 3 true masters and innovators of their instruments at the absolute height of their game. Brann tones down his trademarked "3 minute drum-fill" style and putting confines on his creativity lends the songs greater impact in many cases. Brent Hinds (specifically with his performances on Capillarian Crest, Bladecatcher, and the haunting Pendulous Skin) and Bill Kelliher (with the unparalleled beauty and agression of both Sleeping Giant and Circle of Cysquatch).

maybe I should just write a review....

well, if you dig the concept of the album, they just met up with the Cysquatch in the previous track, and were given hallucinogens.

haven't really got into the concept, probably will somewhere down the line. Everytime it comes on I just giggle and wonder what its meant to be. Thanks for clearing it up though!

it's not really the most solid concept, but there are a few places where is feels cool and un-forced.
