Shadow dropping it was a boss move though.

The surprise element has influenced the reaction imo, so yeah it was a genius move lol. The fact Turner is now involved obviously being a major factor also. Great album tho and definitely a breath of fresh air when their last album was Fires. (2) to everything Deathconscious said.

"I'm betting ratings will be bumped down over time a little"
Already bumped mine down lol
I don't think it'll ever be below a 4.5 for me. The surprise release has to do with the hype train and the acclaim for sure. HOWEVER, and specially after doing a full discog run, it is still on the level of Enemy and ASTNS, definitely above the latter two before this.
I can admit it doesn't reach TSIB, Times of Grace + Grace, GTTR or even SAZ for me, but that's just a super crazy high bar to reach. I can't ask anything more from this band given all of the circumstances surrounding this.

I really don't see my rating ever being bumped down. Album is flawless.

Hard for me to know where it stands compared to the others because they have such a large discography. I'm up to Given to the Rising on my discography run now.

hmmm for now, in the context of their discography, I realized it's still well below my all-time favorites. But then again I have more attachment to these other records so I guess time will tell. I may re-bump this again in the foreseeable future.

Definitely can see it taking some time.

I would definitely put Enemy of the Sun, Through Silver in Blood, Times of Grace, and The Eye of Every Storm over this, and maybe a couple of others, so it's kind of crazy to me that this has a 4.5 average right now. Not to shit on this album, it's either going to be a 4 or 4.5 for me, I just don't think it's going to be in my S tier lineup for Neurosis.

Thats understandable. It did just come out two days ago though so it could always move up. People, myself included, could be "overrating" this atm, but I really just think it's flawless. The comeback aspect could have something to do with it, but I just feel like this has all the best of what they have to offer.

Completely agree, feels overrated due to the surprise factor. I honestly don’t feel the aoty status right now.
|
| |
Well overrated or not this really is a monumental comeback. Shit's so fucked up right now, it just feels great to have another Neurosis album to listen to. I and a lot of other people needed this.

Agreed so hard brother.

Exactly. And Aaron Turner joining the gang makes you hopeful anything is possible, as dumb as that sounds. It's so mind bending...

Almost 140 ratings and still holding the 4.5 average, I fucking love it.

It does give me a lot of hope for the future of Neurosis, I think some new blood is exactly what they needed.

Yeah I just really disagree man. I’ve literally already listened to this at least 20 times and I’m not even a little bit tired of it. I actually like it MORE now than on first listen when I legitimately was almost in tears at the idea of new neurosis. I know it’s only been a few days but I think this is absolutely aoty material.
“ Fires Within Fires sounded kind of tired, this one does not at all.”
I don’t entirely disagree, I like Fire Within Fires, Honor In Decay a little less, they’re both fine. But yes, in comparison those records sound like a group of guys on autopilot compared to this.

I'm with you Wildcard bro. I'm probably on 30-35 listens at this point and it's just getting better.

Couple more listens under my belt with a revisit to some isis and the ocean albums mixed it. Yeah it’s flawless. The more I listen and become familiar with it, the better it gets. It’s so dense, too, in the best way. Can’t wait for their set at fire in the mountains. I wonder if it’ll be a full play through of this or if they’ll go back into the discog for live shows…
