i was just trying to find an answer for flagash based off of what kneejerks to this sort of thing tend to be. it wasn't actually directed at anyone in particular, and certainly not at anyone giving this ratings like 2.5

I perfectly get what Janelle is doing here, the problem is that there so many albums by woman (of colour) being outwardly sexually expressive that are nowhere near as sloppy in execution as this one. I would argue even Janelle herself did this much better on previous albums.

I just think a 2/5 is wild for such a well crafted album, like the production is very good and she sounds very good
It just feels like people want Archandroid part 2

honestly it's wack that people bring race into it for no reason, weirdos

"Although I do think the lipstick lover video is hilarious considering her stance on objectification"
what actually is objectification and how does it apply to that video

maybe i should specify sexual objectification. i very much doubt you are not aware of the concept colton, but there's one scene in particular that sticks out where monae's face is in the corner and there's just an ass and back in frame, combined with the lyrics seems fairly in line with the principles as i understand it.

ok but if someone speaks out against objectification it seems pretty clearly implied that they mean objectification against someone’s will. so framing sexual expression in art as being opposed to that notion just feels regressive

"ok but if someone speaks out against objectification it seems pretty clearly implied that they mean objectification against someone’s will"
well to be fair, i've seen people speaking out on objectification in music videos where i'm sure the participants were not necessarily coerced into being in the videos

It’s probably an autonomy thing
“I should be able to sexualize myself, but that doesn’t mean you should sexualize me”
Idk I like that she’s giving lgbt representation though

i’ve seen people say a lot of things doesn’t mean you have to be one of them

The ratcheting-up of the “autosexual” vibe on this album is interesting lol
|
| |
There’s a part of me that looks at the superficiality of the album and the cover art and wonders if it’s actually extremely satirical but I’m not willing to dig deep enough to find an answer
If so, the knee jerk reactions are lol tho

Like if she’s just doing a thing then this album deserves a shout out from Kyle Prue

Nah this is a sincere thing

I don't think it comes across as superficial in a sense that it is hollow. Just seems quite honest in what it is. Fun, outward expression of sexuality. Nothing more and nothing less.
Her albums in the past have been conceptually and musically broader, though. This one hyperfocuses on one theme that has come up in her past albums.

Probably go ahead and not take anyone on sputs word for it
Also will not investigate further

I remember an interesting tough question came up around Watch the Throne in my circles. I think it’s gotten only more relevant but it’s the question of the extent to which it’s like genuinely interesting to hear someone brag even if you can recognize they deserve the right.
I like water slide a lot but eventually one becomes cognizant that the border between musical expression and day to day expressions from people we know is not so impenetrable as to make someone saying they think they (the person speaking/thinking) are really hot a compelling proposition unless greatly modified or counterbalanced with other stuff
