C'mon gents. This is not great by any means but to say it's completely skippable is a bit harsh. At the very least, worth at least one spin to remind yourself of how great DsO used to be.

I think the closer is actually essential DSO at this point. It seems really fucking underrated here, no one ever mentions it. I just wish it had an album of matching quality in front of it.

This is fine. Just sounds like they leaned harder into the melodic aspect of their sound. Definitely not my favorite of theirs but it's probably a solid 3-3.5

I think I've finally lightened up on this enough to give it 3.5. It's been a long road lol.

glad to hear someone is giving it a chance haha...I actually like this one quite a bit -- especially when i'm going down a DSO rabbit hole. The album fills a space the others definitely don't, with moments that only they can pull off (i.e. the closer)

Last time I listened to this it was sick

Still drags a lot. But there are stretches that feel like the good ole DSO. Plus I’m now in a place where the solos are just cool. And comparing other bands that these guys have clearly influenced and just listening to a lot more bm in general have given me some different context for comparison that put this in a more favorable light.

If we’re only counting everything from Si Monvmentvm onwards, then yes this is the worst thing they’ve ever made, including EPs and long songs released solo such as Mass Grave Aesthetics and Chaining the Katechon (are those considered EPs?). But as far as black metal goes I think this is engaging, I think it’s very polished and the performances are overall pretty damn good, plus there’s more vocal variety here than anywhere else in their discog.
There’s a lot to love here, I think people are just so blinded by how stellar their earlier works are that they allowed themselves to think this is a pile of trash when in reality it simply just doesn’t live up to expectations… which are absurdly high.
If some no name black metal band dropped this it wouldn’t receive a fucking fraction of the hate that it gets. It would honestly be very well received and would turn heads in the scene imo

I mean seriously once you know not to expect DSO as you know them it’s a damn good record.
I mean shit, Drought is Deathspell by way of metalcore if we’re being forreal. And everyone likes that EP

It’s the opposite; if some no name black metal band dropped this, it would be like a fart in the wind. Chunks of this are just flat out embarrassing. There are albums which shoot for the starts and wildly miss, but at least then form the basis of a new sound for the band - this is utterly turgid throughout and completely derivative, to the point where it feels like a their guitarist had a severe case of writer’s block but felt obligated to release something. Given this band’s history, that most likely isn’t true and it’s simply a dreadful album.

I think realistically too, many are really overplaying their "downfall". This is one bad album, which is still arguable for others if it's bad or not in a slew of great records before it. Unless the next album absolutely tanks then I'd say this decline is being exaggerated heavily. Hoping whatever they do next is a home-run or the very least similar to their usual efforts.
