those first 3 and a half minutes of Chasmal Fires is the best epic opening of any metal album ever and should be used in a movie

man, it's so funny - i was afraid people wouldn't like that part (or find the song overwrought) and it's become the fan favourite... mindblowing. it relies on a very simple motif and i thought people might tire of that but i stuck to my instincts and it paid off. thank you

yeah that's def one of my favorite parts too, up there with the guest vocals on the same track and the ending to Astral Mariner
so many great moments throughout, though

it is an ambient intro i liek da ambient
|

i wanted the ambient (if you can call it that) to be purposeful. i think i see a lot of ambience used pretty poorly in black metal, arbitrarily throwing quiet moments in without adding to the song's construction. kinda wanted to break that.

I've noticed a similar element to most poorly done black metal (which this release is the exact opposite). Most black metal bands start their album with some nature sounds and an acoustic guitar the oddly changes volume to thin tremolo electric guitar and blast beats with a scream at the intro of the first real song (like this has occurred on hundreds of records). Thanks for making this one different, and special

"black metal bands start their album with some nature sounds and an acoustic guitar the oddly changes volume to thin tremolo electric guitar and blast beats"
ouch, did you have to make it personal

That is a fairly accurate description of a lot of black metal though. It is really hard for me to like bm bands so i like only, seriously, literally 1% of bm bands. This album is one of the top 20 bm albums of all time for me easily and probably top 10.

I would enjoy black metal so much more if the bulk of the bands in the genre would stop copying one another and just be honest with themselves when creating.

Yeah there is definitely too much warship of Mayham/Burzum and Dark Throne. Not too mention it's for some reason taboo to have good production???

I think that is why I liked Zeal and Ardor so much when he came out. The black metal aspects combined with the unique underground but also polished production was so sweet.

Figure, are you from the 90s?

Yeah excluding the most recent Zeal release they were pretty deserving of the hype. Yeah I am from the 90's egarran. Do I just so obviously exude that hot mess that is millennial energy?

the more trad black metal dudes call my band "gay", "pussy", or "pink dildo bm", the more I'm sure I'm onto something
|
| |
this isn't really just black metal though, i hear a lot of post-rock in this music some of the heavier post-rock bands, even bands like Godspeed at points here.

The only way to move a genre forward is to piss off the purists.

ya I hear Godspeed and like, Light Bearer with the post-metal and prominent strings?
