I like this band's output just for the sheer weirdness of it. The new album is good but the way they play with riffs and song structure sometimes feels like it's giving me blue balls. It's like that .gif of that truck about to run into the pole but it's edited in such a way that it never collides.

That's what this NEW album reminds me of. It spends so much time building to something and then sidesteps it with a synth interlude or just completely detours into something else. You rarely get a handhold onto the song because it's always moving. I also object to the idea that this band has any shared DNA with Meshuggah, a band notorious for sitting on a single riff and playing it in perpetuity. Even the djent comparisons are iffy (at least in terms of recent Vildhjarta--I get that "Dagger" is djent as fuck).

The DNA is there except instead of repeating riffs these guys will play a Shuggah ass riff and then transition into something weirder

a lot of people would benefit from the phrase "expectation is the thief of joy", just accept where the music is taking you.

^ based af and totally agree.

But on the contrary to the previous criticisms, I actually find that this new album provides more “payoff” (as well as recurring melodic themes) than priors, it’s just perhaps not the payoff you expect like you said Calc. That’s why I feel like it’s their best

You know what? You're absolutely right.

Two tracks in and the new one is already way more interesting than this, which was kind of a plodding rehash tbqh

Their art kicks ass

"Plodding rehash" I mean its kind of a sequel to the original, I liked how they built upon the first album in that sense.

this lacks the glue and spirit holding together the first album entirely

every intuitive groove and riff is foregone in favor of pointless chugs that fall flat at both doing what's right and subverting it

calling it a sequel just because it shares a name is as bad as calling korn III a sequel to korn's debut, when the two are entirely stylistically and structurally different, just because the band brands them as companion pieces

(except korn III is good in its own right and this isn't)

reminder to fully reject every band's failure to assess and categorize their own work instead of enabling their delusion

yes sir, i, the one who continually asserts that djent is garbage, and has his own idiosyncratic shitposting style, am certainly the alt of tundra, the one who loves djent nigh unilaterally, and writes in his own immediately recognizable way. we represent the duality of m/an, you see.

yup, that certainly is the level of pattern recognition and comprehension of nuance i would expect from one who can't tell what makes Masstaden good and its followup significantly less good. you see loud chuggy music on the surface in both cases, and like loud chuggy music, and so it's good enough for you. you see an opinion you don't like, regardless of what it is, and immediately liken it to previous disliked opinions, even if they have nothing in common.

(also i am objectively correct about everything i have ever written which isn't empirically proven to be wrong btw, especially korn III)

The new album actually has me reminiscing about SikTh and how they haven't made anything in nearly a decade 😪

Man it did not feel like the Sikth release was that long ago... Production here sounds pretty awesome ngl. Could do with less compression but it's fine. Cool how this has Svensk lyrics
