This is a lot heavier than I noticed on first listen, I think it's a logical progression of their sound without it being uninspired and watered down like Magma and L'Enfant in some cases

I don't think Magma's amazing, but still a really solid record nonetheless. But to me this is just... meh. Which I didn't think I'd ever say for a Gojira album, but it is what it is, I guess

Couple of listens now and I’m just not feeling it

It’s obviously not bad but it just feels safe which is weird because a balls out flesh/sirius clone would’ve been safer for their fan base

perhaps they're not interested into catering to their fanbase

"which ones don't you like?"

I don't actively dislike any song on there but a couple are just pretty mid for gojira standards.

That’s what I was saying mythodea, they’re not catering to their normal audience because it’s not as heavy as their best stuff, yet the album feels very safe to me, lacking any big new ideas. The main thing they’ve added more of over the last couple albums is the softer side but I just don’t think they’re that great at it.

@Shemson, Yes, I get your point completely.

I still don't know if it was a coincidence that the first album I properly listened to was the first majorly different one (Magma) or if it was because of that change that I felt I could approach (although I was familiar with heavy stuff at the time).

Thing is, I am okay with both their older and newer stuff for different reasons. It's not like we're talking Opeth-levels of change anyway.

Magma wasn't watered down tbh. Different? Fuck yes, but it wasn't the hyperbolic shame that most fans gave it. The dog may have gone to the vet, but it didn't come back deseeded on that one.

This is a good point.

First time listening to Gojira since FMTS. Production is weird but it's surprisingly good.
