Album Rating: 3.5
I thought I loved this at the beginning, but maybe I was just too drunk when I listened to it
Yeah 3.5 - bed head best confirmed

This has definitely grown on me (after the initial post-hype dip), Bed Head through to Let it Storm is a really great run.

I know the production here is so layered and textured and dense but it honestly feels muddy and muted here. Black Mile somehow used that to its advantage (I believe a certain staffer described it as 'cavernous'), but here it just feels ...neutered. the end of Bed Head should be way more powerful than it is
I love this band but I'm afraid my rating is gonna end up in the 3-3.5 range

@Project and @Demon I kinda agree with you both. Album feels like its growing a bit, but I am not sure this is more than like a 3.7 for me. For comparison I jammed Science Fiction after listening to this a couple times through this morning and it is just not in that 4.5/potential classic range. It has its moments, but doesn't reach the heights I was hoping for.

Well that’s an interesting opinion

That's a great point. Reminds me of more recent National albums
|
| |
this is what the kids call overproduced tae fuck. unlike the most recent National album, this ain't for a lack of substance, but fuck me if I'm not tempted to rejam in full until individual tracks grow a little

the production isn’t the problem per say, more the fact that they can’t hide their lack of ideas behind murky sound design with this album (:
Kinda how I felt about PUP’s Morbid Stuff, tho a different genre

This obliterates the most recent Natty, but I can’t protest too much re their collective production failings.
|
| |
Morbid Stuff has razorsharp songwriting (almost) across the board, I don't get the comparison
am also unsure whether or not this album has a lack of ideas but tbh I care little enough to take your word for it for the time being ;]

Can’t really blame it on the production. I’m a Modern Production Apologist.
Morbid Stuff has the problem where it lacks identity cuz it hardly sounds like PUP anymore idk. Maybe the songs are razor sharp I guess, I don’t really agree, but it all sounds so generic. Good production is good, but it can affect a band’s charm.

Transitioning to a more modern production style is just difficult. Weird comparison but it’s like if a video game was traditionally made for handheld and they decide to release a title on console in HD. The transition is hard, even tho you can objectively accomplish higher fidelity designs on console.

which is why so many indie developers stick with a retro artstyle and engine
