Fuck sake, I can't believe how well this actually flows together as an album. That tiny silent pause that cuts off Sit/Stay sets you up so well for Bite Your Own Teeth
Somehow becoming my AOTY

Well it'd be like father like son then at least. Next up: the new Norah Jones over some pumpkin spice lattes.
And agreed Choccy, this rules and it shouldn't. Like, it's not very talented composition wise but I can't stop listening to it. It's the musical equivalent of junk food.

I "get" that Sowing 4/5, but at the same time I'm hesitant about seeing this album in any of the site's end of year lists haha

wouldn't say this is untalented composition-wise - the aesthetic is a travesty (and that's obvs the main deal here) and there are a few outright duds, but for the most part the writing dept does a fair job of landing a set of lean pop songs and memorable hooks. doesn't exactly need to reinvent the wheel

Oh it'll definitely be on my list, even if it's the last one included. It has been my most listened to album 2020 so far and deserves at least that. If it lands on the staff list, I'd be shocked.
I sort of agree with your disagreement Johnny - just because something opts for a lean pop structure doesn't mean it's untalented. Curious what you mean about the aesthetic though. I love the overall vibe and image and it's one of the main things that attracts me to this.

hehe by aesthetic, i meant the way this channels pop metal through 2000s nu-horrorstories ;] ig there's nothing inherently wrong with that (though my biases scream otherwise), but the delivery feels so artificial that i don't find it particularly interesting or convincing as an appropriation act

Which fairly, would be one of the main criticisms with this particular album yes? Sometimes the delivery nails the brief, other times it's forced, contrived and down right abhorrent.

Yeah same, the aesthetic really sells this to me. I'm not really into highly compressed super clean metal but as a contrast to the smoother, ambient parts and the pop hooks, it brings out a really interesting atmosphere and contrast.
In a way, it's not trying to fully blend in pop and metal, but make them distinct enough to highlight what both uniquely bring to the overall sound, and then it's up to you to interpret whether it clashes too much.
Honestly really impressed at how the whole second half weaves in and out of heavy and soft seamlessly where it makes sense

I'm fine with the artificial and arguably calculated nature of this thing. It's Poppy, after all, that's what she's been doing since the beginning. Stylistically, it's just fun and well crafted.

I also agree with the contrived, forced nature of this. I eventually listened to it enough that I stopped caring though. It's all about those hooks.

I dont know why but part of me always wants to transition into Breaking Free from High School Musical in the first half of Don't Go Outside
And now that I've said this, you guys can no longer un-hear it ;)
