Also there are some moments here that seem like Justin and Adam disagreed on what to do so they both just did whatever the fuck they wanted

My biggest issue with this album is the lack of vocals. Some of my favorite Tool moments are when the vocals come back in full force towards the climax of a song (Like with Schism, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, Vicarious, Right In Two, etc.) but that doesn't really happen here. And I was BEGGING for it on Descending. Still great stuff though. I think 6-9 minutes is the sweet spot for me when it comes to Tool. The instrumentals are fantastic but I wish it wasn't at the expense of the vocals.

i wonder how this would sit with me if i heard it like... 10 years ago. over a decade gap worth of change in musical taste its hard to listen to this the same way i would have back when i actually had a particular interest in the band

a lot of this sounds so familiar i might as well be listening to 10 000 or lateralus

if this was 5 years later i don't think it would be as big of an issue but after 13 years you kind of expect something huge...
portishead is a good example honestly, 11 years or whatever between s/t and third but third was so fucking left field it felt like an addition to their career rather than a revival or some kind of footnote

Agreed hard. It's like no-one would ever have thought they *needed* Third, but in dropping it the band changed their game a treat
