I have the same relationship with this band as I do with The Beatles. I like a lot of songs by them but don't really like any of their albums the whole way through. This, however might be their most accessible one yet though I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Which bits don't you like on Boxer? Seems like if you like any of it you'd probably like it all :/

4.5 may be ambitions but it just all made sense in the moment, I took it for a walk on a sunny afternoon, it’s my first full day home from school for the summer, and it all closed out with “Lucky You” which is just perfect... So yeah I’m gonna ride it out for now.
Tbh though this has been coming for a long time as I had not revisited the album as a whole in maybe 4-5 years. But as I said before, Sleep Well Beast was immediately pretty damn satisfying, the fact that the release of this album prompted a re-evaluation is telling...

'Lucky You' is a perfect one, the band's first 5/5 song in their discog
Do really like anatelier's picks of 'Slipping Husband' and 'Water Wall' too, they definitely ground the album early with some real storytelling heft.

Those three along with “Cardinal Song” and “Available” are absolutely top tier National - I’ve always known that though, it’s the other stuff I’d always underestimated.
Now I’m gonna be struggling to not to listen to Sad Songs instead of this - whoops.

I’ve never listened to their first two albums before...I think you guys have inspired me to do so.

Artuma - well it certainly doesn't sound much like a National song - despite being quite (quite) nice

I like Fake Empire, Green Gloves, Slow Show, Apartment Story, Start a War. The rest is fine but doesn't do much for me. I don't know, maybe this band just isn't my cup of tea.

the debut is really not anything worthwhile unless you're a hardcore fan of the band. sad songs quite literally rocks though

Boxer is almost perfect, Alligator too, HV also gets close... and I say that as someone who’s almost completely abandoned indie music entirely.

Keep trying with Trouble Demon - I mean it has your namesake track on it for a start
I still believe it is their best, even more accomplished than Boxer somehow

Boxer is a strong 3.5-4.0 but every album they made after that was better

It's hard to sink into Matt's nonchalant, cynical wit with all these guest vocals. I'm feeling it breaks up his vibe too much. That could change, who knows.

Yeah, take everything I say with a grain of salt - it’s been two days with this whereas I just bumped Sad Songs from 3.5 to 4.5 after knowing it a solid 7-8 years. Anything can happen with this band.

Yea, I ended up bumping a couple albums to 5 after listening to them throughout the years. They're like a slowly growing infection.

Sleep Well Beast had the feeling of a finale but I love this band so much I'd rather see them continue to churn out albums because at their worst they're still better than 90% of indie bands out there.
