The more I see people acting all heartbroken about this guy the more sick I get.
I understand and empathize with the “RIPs” but anything past that is bad.
Unlike this thread tho, hell yea fam :]

Aw that was cute c:

So if xxx art was good should his actions be more forgiveable? Cuz nah. Quality of art has nothing to do with it.
And while separating art from artist is great in theory, it’s pretty much human nature that we don’t do that. No matter how much I enjoy listening to brand new, their legacy will always be super tainted to me, for example. I just see it as the same psychology that led this guy to beat his pregnant girlfriend is the same psychology that led to the creating of this album.

I don’t see why connecting artist and art is so bad. That psychology kind of led to the creation of xxx to begin with, people liked his music so they ignored his actions and let him stay in the spotlight.

not what I'm saying at all. re-read your argument and you'll see that it's a personal issue; if an artist's actions "taint" their music then that's your belief. however, in true separation, the art should be judged and looked at as something completely unconnected to the artist. why? because only the artist knows how much of their true selves have been put into the art and even if an artist says that their art is 100% a reflection of themselves (any other comment is pure speculation), the artist is still conscious it will be viewed by others so that thought alone can skew how they portray themselves. it's not about quality it's about separating the two entirely

Thus spake con and it was good.

the weirdest thing about this is that didn’t he start getting popular last year? and wasn’t he arrested for the beating of his pregnant girlfriend in 2016? it’s not like he blew up and then the public was shocked by the accusations. he grew in popularity in the face of his actions. it’s such a different dynamic than what we are used to and makes the whole dynamic even more interesting

Yeah, people often forget that he was charged for home invasion, robbery, and aggravated battery. Dropping Look At Me! after that was what blew him up.
|
| |
Thats very very very fair. I also just think there’s a point where an artist can become so evil/sociopathic that their true thoughts about their own behavior become irrelevant. To me because of what XXX is done the fact that he’s SAD! is just petty as fuck.
Tbh I was more directing that towards people even bringing the subject of the quality of his music to the discussion of should we feel remorse for him. I wouldn’t be remorseful if he made the best album of all time
|
| |
I am of the opinion that xxx grew in popularity BECAUSE of his accusations, and if that’s not damning of our society I don’t know what is

I feel like there should be a line at which an individual's crimes outweighs their artistry. otherwise you end up with people like Chris Brown and R. Kelly continuing to lead relatively successful careers despite the heinous things they did.
or worse, the abusive actions of people like John Lennon being glossed over entirely while they're essentially deified.
|
| |
Don't forget he suffered from depression! Because now depression makes you beat the shit out of women and gays
|
| |
That being said, lots of people listen to music without knowing or frankly caring about the backstory of the artist they are listening to. And I don’t think that should be condemned. I think it depends on specifically what the artist did, and how much they let it effect the product they create.

it's not the job of a music critic, musician, or music listener to punish. that is the legal system's job

do you believe people like Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen and Victor Salva should continue to get work and be successful and respected in Hollywood?
