@Hvunted: Your argument brings up the possible existence of a "golden standard" of music, which is simply not correct. Perception and subjective music enjoyment have to factor into everyone's personal enjoyment. Let me give you an example. Most of us in here can agree that Converge's Jane Doe is a fantastic album, now let's show that album to a standard music listener (someone who gets their music by checking popular videos on Youtube, listening to various radio stations on Pandora, Spotify, etc). More than likely unless their specific tastes line up with that album, they're going to think it's terrible. The point I'm trying to make is, while there are objective qualities to be critiqued / praised (which I noted very clearly in my review the qualities of this album that can be praised), subjectivity is a necessity, and it's why your argument doesn't really hold any weight for a broad audience or an audience reacting to critique, at best it only holds weight in your own genre / subgenre circles. Even then, holes can very clearly be poked in it.

I have to agree with Snide here. No matter how high or low an album's rating is, it shouldn't mean shit as far as your personal rating goes. For instance, just because the vast majority enjoys something doesn't mean it's necessarily objectively great. Subjectivity applies to any album regardless of majority opinion, and it does bug me that we can't 1/1.5 albums with a 4.2 or higher.

Granted, I don't enjoy this band or album much at all. But if he likes it and can back up his opinions sufficiently, that shouldn't matter

@Soccer: That's one thing that's always bothered me as well and something that needs to be fixed, there's plenty of 4.2 / higher albums that are legit garbage to me and I just end up not rating them because the site won't let me.

First of all- I did not see your comment about my avatar earlier, somehow it passed unnoticed by me. It’s Thom Yorke, Radiohead vocalist, which if not for him and his band your favourite band would probably never exist in the first place. They are the band that changed people’s minds about whole rock genre. If your comment was not sarcastic, and you really did not know who this is, I don’t want to continue this discussion any longer, because you clearly are not a person who should be talking about music, especially reviewing it. But okay, I’ll take my time. 2nd- By no means I’ve tried to offend you, I don’t know you in person so I have no reason to bash you. Everything I’ve said was about your persona as a reviewer and user of this site. 3rd- Personal enjoyement, as much as it determines whether you’ve liked a specific album or not, should not have such an impact on your final score for an album. You are bringing Converge as an example for your argument. Certainly, „Jane Doe” is a great album. And certainly, people who listen to music only from the „top charts” on spotify or radio will not like it. And what it has to do with how the album is rated amongst critics? Nothing, because these people can say whatever they want about this. They are NOT music critics. They don’t know shit about what’s good and what’s not, they’re narrow-minded, listen only to stuff from the radio because they can dance/sing to it. They don’t care about the complexity of instrumentation, the atmosphere created by effects, the singer’s voice range and diversity etc. They are just monkeys who will enjoy everything as long as it’s catchy. So, do you really think it’s a valid argument?

4th- Tell me, why do you think professional music critics and reviewers hide their personal bias towards an artist, and make their reviews as objective as possible? Once again, because personal enjoyment means nothing if the music is straight garbage. People enjoy a lot of things, somebody can enjoy Rebecca Blacks’ Friday. Do you think it’s good because someone without any knowledge enjoyed it? I don’t think so. Lastly, you’ve said you pointed out qulities of this album wich can be praised, yeah? Sure, that’s fine. But what about specific things that cannot? Isn't a music REVIEWER supposed to be REVIEWING music, and pointing out specific qualities that are great, and those that should have been made better? Instead, you just use your reviews to show people how much you love your favourite band. And what’s strange, people are defending you. I guess not everyone should be allowed to use these kinds of sites. But whatever. I appreciate you’ve tried bro, and I can see why you are not completely laughed at there, because your arguments can make sense, and if you hid your personal feelings about everyhing you review you may have been a respected and legit music reviewer. Listen to your „whoooohoo we are repeating words in choruses because we don’t know what else to do” band. It’s your taste, I guess. But don’t ever show it in your reviews that much, if you don’t want more intelligent side of people here to cringe at your reviews. Bye.
