A hard 4 for me. Gonna give this a few more listens but can see it getting up to 4.5 for sure. Probably gonna compete with Everything to Nothing for my favorite MO album, just crushing lyricism. Great review!

You all make no sense. Literally none at all. Are we listening to the same thing?
I've always thought Andy Hull has one of the richest voices in all of indie/alt-rock, and while his songwriting has sometimes given way to inconsistency, his vocals (and especially their layering and production) have only ever improved with just about every release.

I love his voice. It has always been the highlight of this band. But they threw his voice into a cavern and stuffed a fucking pillow over it on this album.

I hope this grows, but it has been a little frustrating to listen to it. Has potential, though, so we'll see. I want to give it more time, but it's just not begging for my attention.

This hasn't grown at all on me. I still only enjoy their first two albums and that's most likely based solely on nostalgia.

are people who arent liking the vocals not a fan of his voice at all (understandable) or people who preferred the raspier, more raw sound of METN (also understandable). I guess i love this so much because i like his vocals from SM on compared to their earlier stuff.

It's the production I don't like. His voice is great. The production on Simple Math is much clearer and not drenched in reverb enough to be buried like it is here.

Only listened once and I'm fairly sure it's the best thing I've heard all year.

I'm trying to resist 5'ing this because tbh I hate giving out 3 perfect scores before summer is even over
But I've connected with this more than I have Fleet Foxes or Lorde, two albums I 5'd that I think might be musically better and more well-produced but they lack the same emotional punch and I care about this record more. Help.

I think the reverby production is appropriate here. This album feels like some sort of surreal, melancholy dream world to me.
