Wil did some shitty things and if he continued to do those shitty things he’d be a shitty person, but he’s hardly a monster. People should be given the chance to change. He’s no rapist. He’s no pedophile. He’s no murderer. Idk. It just seems like runaway cancel culture more than anything else. Again, it sucks and was not cool, but it’s nothing so vile that no one should have access to his art or that supporting Smith Street should come with some kind of mandatory guilt trip.

to be totally fair, it did seem that a narrative of serial abuse was being pushed as part of the accusations, substantiated by emails and messages submitted by a few of wil's ex-partners (not just georgia), with the overall intention of stopping wil from continuing to do shitty things. again it's important to emphasise rowbro's point that it's still unclear which side holds the prevailing grievance, or how much of what was said is true. but i dont want to totally discount the experiences of the women who came out against wil or the possibility that wil might be a volatile, cruel person in his romantic relationships who needs help and accountability. with all of these #metoo situations we tend to gloss over concern for the (alleged) victims because they havent necessarily made art that we care about deeply. but in this particularly foggy situation, it doesnt seem like we can do anything about all that. my point is just that there's a legitimate view on this issue that's makes it more than just "runaway cancel culture", and we should be cognizant of it.
New music soon, hopefully.
dude the new post is accompanied by an announcement that they've been recording new music (and they posted new photos of themselves recording a lil while ago). if you thought this record was uncomfortably evocative of private matters within the sphere of public knowledge well just wait til you hear the next one!

These things should be acknowledged, yes, and maybe I was unaware of the extent of a recurrent pattern. I don’t think anyone’s story should be minimized, but I also don’t think that Smith Street’s future endeavors should be seen as something that should not exist. I know it’s a tricky balance, because there are very legitimate reasons and cases in which an emotional abuser deserves to have their life completely reshaped as a consequence for their actions, but based on what I have read about the situation it doesn’t seem as if this is one such case. I could be uninformed, because I had to step away from some of the social media firestorm surrounding this because it became exhausting. These kinds of things should be held up to scrutiny, but I do think there are times in which people refuse to see the possibility that someone can change for the better, and again, I don’t think that Wil is worthy of a lifetime of infamy (maybe it won’t be anywhere near that extreme admittedly).

hmmm yeah this is just a shitty situation all-around. i haven't jammed the smithies much since those emails were released because reading them made me feel very very icky and put wil in a super terrible light but at the same time none of this shit was any of our business anyways.

Seems Will and Georgia are both shitty people as far as I can tell. Excited for new music though.

i mean I used to view Wil as a saint and yeah turns out he's kinda flawed like the rest of us, he's said and done shitty things and maybe isn't the bloke we all thought he was but I don't think it's a reason to stop supporting them at all. I think the witch hunt against SSB has been pretty grim and undeserving as a whole. Still love the dudes. Brunswick show this thursday fyi

Hes clearly a really immature person, i dont doubt that some of what Georgia is saying is true.

No doubt but the fact that these things came out years later show a lack of maturity from her side too and the attempts to 'cancel' SSB. They both have done bad things yet her band hasn't had any ramifications, I can't help but feel for Smithies a bit.

The Smithies have had their career effectively tanked by something that absolutely did not warrant it. Being blacklisted from Triple J, having support acts refuse to play with them without due cause and losing a considerable portion of ignorant fans, all the while Georgia has consciously and knowingly profited off the back of their demise. It's the type of response that should be reserved for the Jesse Laceys and Ryan Adams' of the world. Feel awful for the band (not to say Wil did no wrong of course, as he has himself acknowledged)

how so? this seems like an unwarranted and unsubstantiated accusation particularly given that the two bands have little to do with each other aside from this personal history
