Haven't heard the new version yet! The old one was perfect though (except for Venus In Fear, never really liked that one).

though i personally think midian even sounds a lot worse but that's just me

I think I've just heard them so many times that their particular sounds have just become part of their charm to me. Nothing quite sounds like them. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I've never had any difficulty with the way any of their records sounded actually.

Yeah the production might be terrible here but it kinda fits the music. It's sorta like being in an old haunted castle with the drums echoing from (really) afar.
