Those albums are already perfect though

not in any way lol
both of them have two songs at the very least that could've been swapped out for far superior songs that were written around the same time

Which ones would you swap out for?

Album Rating: 4.9
Answer does not fit onto this album at all tho. Mike Love's annoying ass "sike, you can't make it on your own lol" judgement jars with the "lovers running away and seeing the world" theme utterly and completely

I so completely disagree. the buoyancy. that chorus. the buoyancy of the chorus. it's so buoyant

Sunflower is perfect as is. Surfs Up lose Student Demonstration Time and add 4th of July/Live Again for sure

@Rowan Agreed about Student Demonstration time, but I'm equally not a big fan of Got to Know the Woman on Sunflower.
How about Friends? That's just about perfect if it didn't have Anna Lee. Throw in the best song from Wild Honey and voila.
BTW that 4.9 makes me wanna cry, Rowan.

What's wrong with Anna Lee? It's such a pretty little ditty.
Also I kinda dig both student demonstration time and got to know the woman.
Youd need upbeat songs to replace them in the tracklist or risk ruining the album's flow. As pretty as 4th of July and love again are, they're too ballady to work as replacements

"Which ones would you swap out for?"
Sunflower - swap out Got to Know the Woman for Fallin' In Love (aka Lady); not too huge on Add Some Music but it's good enough to remain. Add Soulful Old Man Sunshine as well, which I think is a very underrated cut.
Surf's Up - [2] to Rowan's choices, as for the need for upbeat songs, I feel that's not true when it comes to Surf's Up considering the majority of the songs are anything but upbeat or positive. Cut Take a Load Off You Feet and SDT.

But regarding stuff being cut from albums, you could make so many cases for every single of their albums post-Pet Sounds all the way up to Adult/Child. So much wasted potential really.

oh yeah Soulful Old Man Sunshine is a tune, I love it when Carl messes up the lyric. I love Got to Know the Woman tho. as for Friends, We're Together Again instead of fucking Transcendental Meditation, it's perfect otherwise
and this 4.9 is only due to my aforementioned ire with Mike Love's shitty lyrics on one song. classic album otherwise

The outtakes from the Sunflower sessions are surprisingly weak tbh, I like "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" but more or less I think the band did well at picking the best of the lot

The main issue with the outtakes is that there were at least two more albums worth of material, and this is accounting for the stuff they left off of 20/20, lest we forget a solid fourth of this was intended for a 20/20 followup with Capitol before their contract expired.
