honestly, this whole album just feels like a cash-in on recent political issues. it's exaggerated, preachy, ironic, and comes across as incredibly self-righteous to me

"Not really, I think it's supposed to disturb and make the listener feel bad. I don't think you have to experience something to make others think about it. Art/literature often puts us in the perspective of another because it's easier for us to grow an emotional attachment that way. It helps us visualize something we might never have to see ourselves."

And this among many reasons is why people should cool it on the whole "cultural appropriation" gripe. Writing from someone else's perspective isn't the same as blackface or something.

That being said, I don't think the lyrics are any good here. Uncreative, hamfisted attempts at shaming the listener more than uniquely provoking any genuine thoughts on the laundry list of political positions sung about on these tracks.

You'll only find it stimulating and profound if you agree with the positions taken in the first place. Which is why Hurrican is right about it failing as political art, in my opinion.

this is pretty insufferable, like she's trying to call on hot button issues in the least productive way possible

Glad you see the light man. I'm all for political art but I can't sit here and call these 2nd grader tier lyrics profound in any meaningful way.

Yep dude, doesn't help that it's very boring instrumentally, it's pretty clear she wanted us to focus on the lyrics

I like her and I like the production on this but the only lyrics I recall on this are the Obama ones and not for a good reason

An album ahead of its time by virtue of its tardiness. We are too late; nothing to do but wait for drone bombs, execution, hopelessness. Fuck to "4 Degrees," laugh at "Obama," consider yourself above it all; turn off the news. You're a piece of shit. ANOHNI is a piece of shit. Daniel Lopatin, I don't know, he probably sucks too. Hudson Mohawke can definitely get bent. A peculiar album where every song's a ballad without a single track functioning like much of anything, just all escalating synths and battering rams and pluvial music beds. Party like the doomsday clock's at 11:59.
