Deafheaven were never a sp00ky trve bm act, their whole edge was that they played a unique brand of bm that was upbeat and euphoric and this album isnt really, its in some sort of identity crisis between wanting to be both and that just doesn't work.

Yeah. It doesn't work at all. This album sucks. I like Sunbather a lot for what it is but this album is garbage.

definitely think on sunbnather they sounded like their own band, but it didnt seem at all a 'unique brand of black metal' to me. and oh god, the imitation bands that have spawned after are atrocious. there is generally a lot of horrible blackgaze stuff out there, but like dear god i could have written that ghost bath record
