Mangini is shit, yeah he's a technically gifted drummer but he's damn boring.

people just hate him because he's not as good as Portnoy, and true Portnoy was better but I think he fits in pretty well with DT, even if it doesn't show all the time.

Na, people hate him because he embodies everything that's wrong with DT nowadays: boring, uninspired, pedestrian music.

again, he is just doing what he's asked to do......guy is incredible.....listen to some of his work from his past

portnoy is a better songwriter, as is Kevin Moore compared to Jordan Rudess......tastefulness and emotion

fucking pessimists

Album Rating: 4.5
No drummer should be 'told what to do', always thought the drums are the most important instrument in a band and all the little nuances and moments of flair is what excited me about Portnoy.
Yeah Mangini got chops no doubt, I just wish I heard them more!

Dramatic Turn of Events wasn't the best debut for him I'll admit (though I think the drum mixing was to blame at times) but I think The Astonishing gave more time to shine.
*insert comment of how I'm fucking stupid for liking The Astonishing*

Pretty easy to be a pessimist when they squander a great drummer with a double album of ballads. I didn't mind the self-titled or Dramatic though they were merely sustaining the status quo.

Need a remastered rerelease of A Dramatic Turn Of Events complete with instrumental-only versions of of all songs 2nd disc. (half kidding)
This album is my favorite by DT. Give up on misery, turn your back dissent, leave their distrust behind, wash your hands of regret...

Overall, The Astonishing has some great moments, but most of it is very tepid and bland. The second half is less interesting than the first half.
Breaking All Illusions is probably still their best song since Octavarium.
It'd be nice to have Moore and Portnoy back, but Petrucci has really taken the band over in recent years it seems :/ He can be a fantastic songwriter and is an amazing musician, but is really best in a band setting with other band mates contributing, like if Mangini was able to really show off his chops, as people have been saying.

Wasn't "Take The Time" from Images & Words contributed to by literally everyone in the band? They need to do more of that.

Seeing The Astonishing from top to bottom on the 23rd. Should be interesting lol

Seeing it live on the 19th here, pretty sure they'll use those CGI animations for a backdrop.

I'd be very curious to hear how those go. The Astonishing does have some great stuff on it, I'm listening to the highlights right now actually.
