"Let's play some technical metal, throw some symphonic shit in, and top it off with absolutely unintelligible lyrics dubbed in post-edit with some echo-effect to deliberately make it impossible to tell what the vocalist is saying." - Formula for metal circa the year 2000+. Jesus Christ, Fall Out Boy is more metal than this crap and I want to give myself a lobotomy just for typing that.

lmfao from a youtuber

Reddit and 4chan and shit like pr0gram are sufficient proof that the internet attracts and gathers all the worst kinds of people.

eh i think it's easy to shit on reddit/4chan/whathaveyou, but just because a large community has some shitty people doesn't mean the whole community is shitty

that's the same rhetoric we've seen applied to islam as of late

really the only thing that brings the worst out of people on the internet is anonymity

The fact that there's basically zero accountability for anything posted on 4chan due to the anon system pretty much makes 4chan a bad place by definition in my books. There may be as many dumb people on Reddit but at least there are mods on that site.

"eh i think it's easy to shit on reddit/4chan/whathaveyou, but just because a large community has some shitty people doesn't mean the whole community is shitty"

I never said that, I was implying that they are breeding grounds for the some of the worst shit that happens. Reddit has a KKK subforum, until recently you could publically make threads for doxxing, SWATing and that type of shit.

Same thing still applies to 4chan. Not to mention all the otherwise borderline illegal and generally obnoxious bullshit being pulled there. Am I saying that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is like that? Of course not, don't be an idiot.

"that's the same rhetoric we've seen applied to islam as of late"

Moot point, see above for reasons.

"really the only thing that brings the worst out of people on the internet is anonymity"

Actually no, the situation is more complex than plain anonymity. If it was that easy there wouldn't be whole SoSci research departments dedicated to the study behind these mechanisms. It would also imply wherever someone is made to identify that behavior would be stopped dead in its tracks, that is evidently not the case.

I think the distinction I am trying to draw is rather than saying "of course the internet is terrible, look at all the shitty people on it", it's more "there are a bunch of shitty people, and the internet provides a platform for them to meet".

Do you kind of get the subtle difference? You're absolutely right that those communities have provided the staging area for really shitty behavior, but I think saying that they are proof that the internet attracts the worst kind of people ignores some of the really cool shit that happens in those places.

Zaru brought up the other word I was looking for - it's anonymity mixed with no accountability.

It's a moot point, but there *are* SoSci research departments devoted to studying this behavior :]
