"if this had come out directly after Somewhere at the Bottom instead of after Wildlife, it'd probably have a 4+ average here"

i think it would be considerably lower than now. the shock would be too much

Other way around - if this was their debut, it would have a higher score than Somewhere. Imagine getting more emo and more annoying as your band ages. It wouldn't have flown here, that's for sure.

Why does it matter which order they came in?

they've seen to get slower and more mellow with each album

makes all the difference. just like how people "hate" Pianos Become the Teeth now after they got soft, but really that's only because of the impression they already had of the band. If their debut was Keep You, it wouldn't get shit on at all.

@iglu sure, you probably wouldnt have cared. you might have even thought "hey it's not bad for what it is, but not really my thing"

but instead people are mad that it's not the style they used to play, and their ratings are based off spite rather than merit

I don’t think I agree with that at all tbh. This and Keep You would both suck no matter when they were released I don’t see what timing has anything to do with it but idk lol.

I just meant it like, Wildlife was a hard 5, and it's really hard to follow up something that good.

this still just kinda sounds like wildlife 2.5

tracks it like 'woman in mirror' really take their sound to new heights, but overall i feel like this is just a worse version of that album

they're not really similar at all. it's a big change sonically from wildlife. he even sings at some points! *gasp*

lol that is a stretch.... I mean there quite a few are tracks that really stand out and are sonically different but stuff like 'hudsonville', 'extraordinary dinner party', and 'stay happy there' all don't sound too far removed from Wildlife, and the track 'the child we lost' even has the almost exact beginning/drum beat as 'the most beautiful bitter fruit'.

this is still a good album, i just wished they would've pushed further into that new direction more, cause The 'women' tracks, 'objects in space', and '35' are some of my favorites by them
