They’re playing by the rules and trying to keep a number of different metal crowds happy here and sometimes it’s almost comical - Phil goes from proto drill sergeant hard man to trad heavy metal siren often within the same song. Some of the song writing and lyrics are so cheesy and traditional, the nasty/threatening side of the band was yet to be revealed.
Next album they carved their own territory and shook off the fears/pressures and Phil had something to say lyrically

that album doesn't contain falsettos and is therefore inferior

I never paid attention whether Phil had something to say lyrically
All I know is that it makes me wanna bench press a lot of weight and smash someone in the teeth with an ashtray during a bar fight
That's all that matters when listening Vulgar or Driven tbh

This is an album you count the number of influences you can spot - as everyone in this thread has been doing
The next is an album you list the bands that copied the sound they came up with
Is the difference
It doesn't make this album bad, it's more that it's a bit devoid of having a settled and/or unique personality...and some of it isn't that well written or to my tastes
Next three albums are all better because they sound like fully fledged Anselmo albums but this has two classics and another three or four good ones
I listened to it in full today for the first time in 15 years and I was hoping I'd be swept away in nostalgia and bump my score...but my opinions hadn't really shifted since I was a kid listening to it

It's a transitionary album - no secret there. Yeah there's some "genre slave" stuff for sure but there's also some really unique, fresh stuff going on here.

"This is an album you count the number of influences you can spot - as everyone in this thread has been doing

Both of these sentences apply to this album actually.

Isn't that the opposite of being a "genre slave"? Referencing a bunch of different genres means that they weren't slavishly following the constraints of any genre.

Well, some of the album is starting to break free from the shackles but a lot is ‘classic metal’ trope-y - like people said Judas Priest and all that sort of thing. By ‘Far Beyond Driven’ that vibe was entirely gone.
The fact a few songs are hinting at the future Pantera sound just makes the other ‘by the textbook’ stuff more conspicuously genre slave-y for me
I can see why they dropped 70% of the style of this album for the rest of their career put it that way.
For me this album is a 3 out of 5 - but the best 6 songs are worth a 4 out of 5

I see this as their ‘The Real Thing’ - on that Patton seemed to be channeling someone else’s idea of what type of singer/frontman/lyricist he should be and when you go back after knowing where he ended up it’s a bit adorably goofy

Dude, Vulgar Display is just a shittier Cowboys. This was easily their most varied and well-written release.
