i inherited thousands of cards from a friends older brother so I have tons of cards all the way from alpha to like onslaught.
how we always played was just, spend about an hour making decks on the spot from our pile then battle with the new creations.
very fun and didn’t cost us any extra money.

Yep, I'll have to 5 this soon myself. Also, amazing to see MtG ppl round these parts, playing cube very actively with a couple of my friends for about 8 years now

Pioneer is a great format, one that my friends and I have been wanting to have since we have mostly cards from that period and modern is too fucking expensive (or was, dunno what the meta is now)
To me / my playgroup probably the most interesting aspect of MtG is creating your own deck from a limited pool of cards, so we always keep up with new editions by way of either draft or sealed. Funnily enough my first encounter with magic was a custom cube one of my friends printed and made us try the game out that way. It was crazy learning to play and draft at the same time while not understanding completely (or at all in most cases) what the cards did, but it stuck somehow despite everything
I'm this close to 5ing it ( )

The idea of pioneer in a vacuum is great but the format has devolved into 45% monogreen nykthos (because tapping for 9 mana turn 3 and playing a karn the great creator is just really powerful) and rakdos midrange (just a pile of the rest of the best cards in the format). If you don't like playing against either (everyone hates playing against nykthos), the format is a real slog.
Modern is in a great place. Lots of fun decks that on any given day could win a tournament and for the most part, the format is pretty affordable now compared to 3 or 4 years ago. Ragavan didn't help, but reprinting enemy fetches in mh2 was huge. Marsh flats are almost down to 10 fucking dollars rn

a universal truth is that all metalheads are nerds and bad metal is a direct result of non-nerds attempting to make it.

nah guys quit wow, do better
@ford that's pretty sad for pioneer, but great for modern. i suppose the need for pioneer arose bcs of how hard it was to get into modern, and now if there's parity and it's not too expensive, guess everyone can just get back to modern
ragavan is an insane magic card, yeah

have you guys tried tabletop simulator? since all my old magic buddies and I are in different places now we usually just load up TS and play there. for my money, the magic import feature is the closest I’ve got to replicating the actual feel of magic the gathering in a digital setting.
we did an odyssey block game last night and I played white turtle with life win condition lmao.
also I’m about to to chronocrazy from all these riffs.

Hyper, I havent tried out tabletop simulator, sounds pretty awesome. We sometimes played with cockatrice but that was when we were all living in different towns, nowadays we have a small but steady playgroup of 4 people and we play exclusively paper magic, specifically all kinds of cube action
and lol never played odyssey, wasn't that block super underpowered?

Yeah odyssey block was notoriously underpowered. Has a shitload of nostalgia for me tho, that was the standard set when I started playing.
This is probably the best album ever made
