Yeah I'm with lucidity on that one. Except I don't think Max needs to be miserable to write a good album. It's just that this one in particular doesn't strike my fancy. Still looking forward to the next one though, provided SA have another one in them.

Quoted from http://underthegunreview.net/2012/03/13/review-say-anything-anarchy-my-dear/

"Longtime fans will more than likely quickly fall for Anarchy…. From the start the band showcase that indie rock angst...

"Although Anarchy, My Dear has all the makings of being a great Say Anything record, you can’t help but feel that it’s a record that is too-polished and, in places, is missing that raw edge that made previous efforts compelling...

"By the time you reach the title track, you begin to realise Say Anything have matured. The track is laid back and introspective, and much like the album itself, it’s good but not great."

We can probably all agree with at least those parts of the review. Most people here (on Sputnik) are looking for rawer stuff, right? That's mostly a matter of taste but helps explain the response this got on the site. And they don't like settling for 'good' unless it's really fun anyway.

I myself just can't stand the editing. I shouldn't be analyzing a song down to its bones the first time I hear it - I should be feeling the message, the emotions of the song, like I do with every song I enjoy. The flow is almost as important as the parts of a song to me.

But hey, if he's your flavor of candy, he's your flavor. I just tried some pixie sticks. Mmmm.

Crymson just because it's okay to sacrifice happiness for art doesn't automatically insinuate that

your art will be better because you're depressed. I just think a little self-pressure goes a long way

when it comes to crafting a piece of art, even if it ends up eating you inside. I still have a total

boner for everything else Max has done, so eh.

And personally I think quite a few crazy people (90% of Japanese rockers for instance, GACKT) are very happy with who and where they are. Some people are tuned and sensitive enough to emotions, or a bit more naturally wired (like all-ADD Incubus) to make charged music without loosing it all to drugs, booze, etc. But for those whose flavor of 'crazy' interferes with their lives to an unmanageable level, if they change their ways and don't feel comfortable looking back too far that's fine too.

I'm pretty sure that many good musicians reflect on unhappiness, even if they lead overall happy lives, and allow themselves to extend that rough breakup, that betrayal, that loss a little longer to translate it into solid music. Some people are creative and have relatively unique voices in music (SA in IARB), but certain kinds of medication put roadblocks on creative thinking, feeling emotion extremes, etc.

I've followed another musician who started taking anti-depressants, found it harder to make music, and then went off them and took therapy in the act of making more inspired music. I just wish that could be a solution for Bemis, along with the supportive family and network, but his condition is too serious for that.

Dang it whatsgood said it better than I did

Oh man hormones are raging in the early twenties, people definitely get less 'wired' and more 'jaded' as they grow up. Which often makes for aged bands putting out boring albums. Same kind of thing.

It's just that he didn't release a matured album, but he tried to go back to IARB, and wasn't able to grab the spirit that that one had, or fully flesh out the spirit this one had. And then again several Japanese artists I enjoy are about 40 now and still releasing solid hits, so I don't know how much weight I should put on age after all...

I'm saying it's NOT okay to sacrifice happiness for art. That's stupid.

It's not okay to compromise happiness for art, but it's also not an excuse to write a shitty record.

I don't care about Say Anything though, but I could ask my fellow bandmate if he knows the good stuff.

I'm pretty sure the problem is that he's matured, mellowed out and grown up, and you guys haven't, and for some reason you think you're the mature ones. It's kinda adorable.

Art doesn't have to be angsty, and I'm actually a little disturbed that you need happy individuals to go so far as to even reflect on unhappiness for it to be interesting to you. Although that lends itself well to my above theory.

Not to mention I wouldn't call a lot of these tracks "not angsty", it seems like you want him to go beyond angsty and back into "human wreck" in his lyrics. Fantastic.

I don't have a problem with anyone disliking anything, but, really, you guys? (If you dislike it for reasons other than the lyrics, that's a separate issue. I'm aware of you. Don't fire back with "WELL THE REST IS SHIT, TOO")

I don't dislike this because it's not angsty, I don't dislike this because I'm immature, though maybe I am. I dislike it because, surprise, it doesn't sound good to me.
