One of the criticisms I have is that it is too long. Junior Dad could've been cut back to like 4 minutes hahaha! Bordering 20 minutes is getting into "Echoes" territory, and everyone knows "Echoes" as a gargantuan feat to take down. I reckon if Viggo Mortenson and Death Cube K did an album cover of this it would be one of the best albums of all time. Just sayin'

This is an album that should really be classified as a contemporary piece. It's obvious to see it's lightyears away from anything mainstream and it's daring music to push the boundaries of conformity.
I know what you are getting at but I don't think this in itself deserves praise, however.
There is plenty of underground music that has been pumped out for decades that dares to challenge the norm, year after year, to the point it has become it's own kind of norm in the circles where it is well known. The notions of avant-garde and anti-art, despite unconventionality, have built their own kind of mythology of cliches.
The difference here is that Lulu is a big-budget album, free of monetary constraints targeted at an unwitting public. One could argue, that this an attempt at raising consciousness in the mainstream but I don't see anything strikingly original here, except for a mish-mash of incongruent musical ideas tied together by a dorky concept that only works in the most tenuous of fashions.
The whole thing feels incredibly self-indulgent, the result to me is largely tedious butt-rock that overstays its welcome long after its highlights (of which are few, and unfortunately largely of the ironic variety) have vanished into dust. My rating isn't that far off yours, but I think we rate this comparatively high for different reasons.

I see where you're coming from, and I reckon you're right to an extent. I think the album dodged that mythology of cliches you mentioned just on the grounds that they approached a controversial subject matter which, in my eyes at least, was refreshing. And I hope I didn't come across praising the album as much as I was trying to point out that this is an album that needs to be approached with an open mind, because that would be wrong of me. I don't think it's a great example of what it could've potentially have been, if that makes any sense.
I agree with you to a point, and with the freedom that they had to make this thing it didn't come out as good as it should've. But I personally like the concept of it :P It's dark and different.
And you make a good point. It does feel a little self-indulgent. Another criticism I have with it. But I think maybe that's why Lou Reed went with Metallica haha. He knew he'd have money to do what he wanted. I think the album has a lot of potential and that's why I gave it a 3, and because I dug parts of it enough to warrant that (though those parts were marred by the abundance of... monotany I suppose). Listening to it is a laborious task, but I will be wishing of an out-of-the-blue cover from Viggo Mortenson with Death Cube K cover or even a Sunn O))) and Shatner cover would be pretty far out. Still, in the realms of metal I see it as a welcome change and hopefully an inspiration for some better ideas to emerge.
Thanks for sharing your opinions Haz. It's nice to hear someone who doesn't flat out despise it and has a good plethora of reasons to justify your opinions.

You're welcome.

considering a brief scan through Reed's work over the past few years features albums described as "inner music to relax the body, mind and spirit, adjunct to T'ai chi and bodywork" I think there may be something to this

I'm so going to get flamed for this, but I seriously really, really like this album. There's some really good tunes, the lyrics are different (in a great way), and most importantly, there's just so much going on beneath all the adrenalized sludge licks. The quaint, antique-sounding intro to "Cheat On Me" gives me the chills every time, and the thundering main riff of "Frustration" is just so much fun.
I wouldn't be surprised if this makes the list of my top 5 albums at the end of the year.

Lou Reed has stated that Metallica fans have threatened to shoot him due to the collaboration on Lulu. In response to this and the overall negative reaction to the album, Reed commented, "I don't have any fans left. After Metal Machine Music (1975), they all fled. Who cares? I'm essentially in this for the fun of it."[42] Lars Ulrich also noted the negative reaction to Lulu, and stated that he wasn't surprised by the criticism due in part because, "In 1984, when hard-core Metallica fans heard acoustic guitars on 'Fade to Black', there was a nuclear meltdown in the heavy-metal community," and also noted that Reed's poetry is "not for everyone."[42]

Reed found working with Ulrich, Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo exhilarating. "They are my metal blood brothers," says Reed, 69

I'd like to go back in time and play that portion of "The view" where James repetitively sings "I AM
THE TABLE!!!" to an early Kill 'em All era Metallica: "holy fuck, is that going to be us in 30 years??
Are we seriously going to become that pretentious and contrived?" Cliff would be so ashamed.
