Kooks is one of the few songs here that doesn't feel like it was written by an unconvincing Bowie impersonator

The irony is that Bowie wasn't even "Bowie" before this so it doesn't really make sense to say he sounds like a parody of himself.

This came right after The Man Who Sold the World so it's pretty Bowie

Haven't heard that but I always understood this was considered his first "classic".

Space Oddity came two albums before this and is commonly considered to be the song where Bowie emerged fully

but he didn't start shaping his first persona until Hunky Dory.. he wasn't Bowie yet.. the way I understand it anyway.. I mean, when I read Please Kill Me, most people in New York didn't know or cared who he was until the Hunky Dory dust settled and Ziggy started coming around

I mean my point was never that this sounded like cheap Bowie at the time, my point was that it sounds like cheap Bowie in 2017
