i really don't understand the instant hype and love that the new one is receiving (and high violet received when it leaked).

the national are all about emotional connection and lyrics to me, and those always take time and circumstance to develop an attachment to--every national release i've listened to has been a grower. on first listen, the new one sounds sort of nice here and there... but also pretty dull at times. i went in expecting that, so it wasn't a crushing disappointment like high violet was. i'm sure the new one will grow just like high violet did, but i'm also doubting i'll like it as much as alligator or boxer any time soon.

i just can't help but think those who are claiming it's their best or on par with their favourites etc at this point--not even a day after it leaked--are just full of it. of course people listen to music differently etc but still.

getting into The National indeed takes a lot of listens but once you've done that i think it's pretty easy to like their other stuff immediately. High Violet was the first i heard from them and it took a long time to grow on me, after that it has been easy to get into their other albums

the new songs i've heard from them have instantly clicked on me and i wouldn't be surprised if i insta-5'd the album when i've heard it for the first time

High Violet was my first and it didn't take long for me to get into it at all. Same with their other

albums, which I liked pretty much immediately but can't see growing on me any further. Usually starts

with a few songs I love, and then after a short period of time I get into the rest of the album.

Lol. Seems like you're full of it, the belief that albums by The National are growers by default and that any new release must be viewed as such. Trouble Will Find Me is immediate for fans of the band, but also suggests immense depth, as much as any of the past National records. Nothing wrong with reacting to such magnificent music with instant, outpouring love. Consider your arguments before hurling accusations.

^ yep

i'm one of the people that thinks it's their best, actually. maybe the initial euphoria will wear off a little, but i am all over this right now and i can't imagine me putting it down in the foreseeable future. honestly, every single song is gold.

The National have always been a grower band for me with each release. Take's at least 5 listens for it to fully hit me. I'm on the third listen through now and its pretty fantastic yet I have a feeling like with all National albums thus far its only going to get better with each listen.

Well I really like Don't Swallow the Cap and Sea of Love, and they had a head start on the rest of the album, so I hope it'll grow.

seriously though, when you quote just that one part of my post, coupled with that response, it seems like you didn't really read the rest of it and are just hung up fixating on some kind of 'insult' that really isn't even there.

i'm saying they have been all growers to me so far and the new album hasn't immediately clicked. and i said i understand people listen to music differently, so idk. just my perspective.

Yeah, you're right. Sorry that was harsher than intended. I wanted to respond to the general attitude of that particular point (because I see it often), not to you really. That's why I just highlighted that part. No hard feelings dude!
