I always just think of #1 as a transitional piece. Panda's spacey background vox make it interesting instead of just cascading bleeps and bloops.
And while Unsolved Mysteries is probably my least fav as well (if I HAVE to pick), I really dig the pulsing keyboards n shit. And Dave's vocals. Fuck, I just love this album to death.

i'm still not entirely sold on this album. it's very good--sometimes great--but, with the exception of "peacebone", i think even the best songs fall short of greatness, and i never want to listen to something like "chores".

That's a terrible comparison and you should feel bad. #1 is a full on song, not just a sound scape. And don't forget that Treefingers is a masterpiece in terms of ambient music while #1 is just a mediocre song thrown together using a synth and some weird samples.
