@ArsMoriendi Experimental is a very broad term, you know? Some people think a bit of static in a tune is enough for it to be deemed "experimental." Just depends on who's tagging I suppose.

Started as alt-country yeah.
I would say they have a handful songs that can rightfully be called experimental rock but that's it. I wouldn't call them an experimental band at all in general.

Tagged them "indie rock, americana, and alternative rock" to get rid of the experimental tag :P

Probably for the best.
The whole idea that these guys are an experimental band is what (I think) prevents many people from enjoying their albums beyond those immediately before and after YHF. People have since been looking for them to be sonic explorers and while they have a handful of songs in the latter half of their discography that hint at that aspect of their history they have mostly been playing fairly straightforward tunes. For someone like me, that's not an issue, and they're still probably a bit more interesting than your average indie/alt band.
Just my two cents though.

"and they're still probably a bit more interesting than your average indie/alt band."
Exactly! What someone might call experimental about YHF, to me, is just them not being a boring typical indie band

Well a lot of what they've done since is a lot more tame than YHF so you might find them a more typical indie band in that sense.

That's a shame honestly, but at least I know I like 1 of their albums

I'm a believer that bands should make whatever music they enjoy making so I wouldn't call it a shame. Jeff Tweedy remains a great songwriter to this day imo and the band as whole work extremely well as a unit, leading to work which, while not vital, still has a lot of life. The Whole Love in particular is a major career highlight imo.

"I'm a believer that bands should make whatever music they enjoy making"
One of the best things I've ever read on this website
Can't argue with that

It seems so obvious and yet so many people seem to forget it. Innovation is great and all, but it's not the be-all end-all of music.

So far this is every bit as darkly beautiful as I expected from the cover

I'm going with a strong 4 for now but that might be a bit too conservative if anything, beautiful album right here.

I'll start one of those threads:
5/5: Ashes of American Flags > Jesus, Etc. > Reservations
4.5/5: Radio Cure
4/5: Kamera > Pot Kettle Black > Heavy Metal Drummer
3.5/5: War on War > Poor Places
3/5: I Am Trying to Break Your Heart > I'm the Man Who Loves You
Current thinking after four or five listens. "Jesus" and "Ashes" back-to-back might be one of my new favorite moments in music.

Oh dear this will be hard... idk if I can actually rank so I'll just rate the songs.
5/5: I am Trying to Break Your Heart, Kamera, Jesus Etc, Ashes of American Flags, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Poor Places
4.5/5: Radio Cure, War on War, Heavy Metal Drummer, Reservations
4/5: Pot Kettle Black (definitely my least favorite and even it is a 4.5/5 on a good day)
Clearly I love this album a lot :-P
