painkiller's great but it felt like they were trying a bit too hard to stay relevant at that point

it's not a natural revolution like the 70's stuff at all, but it's def a good chunk of blistering metal

I can't get over how fucking good the band sounded back in the 70's.

Kinda strange how Sad Wings came out a year after the last awesome 70s Sabbath album. Almost like they said to Priest "we've done our bit, now its up to you"

And after Screaming For Vengeance, Iron Maiden released Piece of Mind and Powerslave. It's like a cycle.

Priest was beginning their evolution as Sabbath was finishing theirs. After this, it was Maiden's turn to take over.

Mercyful Fate dude.

They took 70's Priest and early 80's Maiden and fused it with s8n vibes.

Oh. That makes sense.

And after thrash died out in the 90's, bands like Death and Opeth began to experiment with more extreme elements to create progressive death metal.

Yup, pretty much.

Can't forget Queensryche or Fates Warning. I'm not a huge fan, but Dream Theater influenced many prog-metal acts as well.

And then you have bands like Agalloch and Mastodon arriving in the late 90's to early 2000's, pushing boundaries in their early stuff.

So yeah, metal has evolved a lot.
