"For example if youre just getting into black metal (like I am) most of the time people are going to throw Emperor, Dissection, Immortal, Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Agalloch, Ulver, Bathory, Wolves In The Throne Room, Drudkh, Enslaved, Weakling, Windir, Nokturnal Mortem, Deathspell Omega, Summoning, Moonsorrow, etc at you.
Those are the highest rated black metal albums on RYM with 3.9-4.0 ratings. Panopticon has a 3.5 rating. I mean why would people rec mediocre stuff if you're just starting out with a genre? Arent they going to rec you the best stuff first? Thus making "entry level" the best? Or again is it just more popular? Obviously you cant just go by average ratings on some websites without listening yourself but Im just curious."
you're assuming that mass opinion equals the right opinion
entry music is called entry music becasue they're the most popular / accessible, so they're bands that people use to enter into a genre. obviously the connotation follows that if you don't know more than the entr ylevel you haven't really been in the genre. the connotation is of course worse if you claim that your entry level shit is all that matters and other bands aren't good by the virtue of the fact that they receive less rym ratings
