I really don't think he's trying to say that this is literally pop music; just that maybe on here they wrote songs and melodies that would be more easily accessible to general music listeners or something, and he regrets it. Agalloch has always been a band that doesn't give a crap about what people think and writes whatever they want to write, and maybe Haughm feels that they were pandering too much to people other than themselves or something.

They went with a more straightforward approach on here so that they could play live easier. The Mantle had so many random instruments (deer skull lol) and they probably realized it was a bitch to play live, so they lessened the post-rock/neofolk stuff to streamline their sound
