Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this is their best work. It's absolutely hypnotic, it's only truly repetitive if you're not listening to the drums or the subtle shifts in the riffs, and it's brilliantly crafted. It has dynamics, huge climaxes, tons of atmosphere, and a lot to say. Oh, and the lyrics are awesome. As a whole, it's a totally mind-bending experience. It was my introduction to the band, and I can't remember hating any music more than I hated it at first - but it called me back repeatedly, and soon enough I was in love.
obZen, on the other hand, had the most predictable soft bits of any Meshuggah album, a good deal of filler, and some misses. It was clearly an attempt for more mainstream success. The last 3 songs are amazing, though, with Dancers to a Discordant System being one of their top 3 songs (along with I and Catch ThirtyThree). That last song is a total mindfuck, which I what I wish more of the album was. I wish they would have explored the creepy-as-fuck ambient bits on C33 even further, but maybe the next album will take them even further out. After all, they said they've saved up some stuff for the next one that was too crazy for obZen...

I would love to see this live in its entirety.
me too
But it's impossible, I'm afraid.
Oddly enough, the band members have stated that they don't remember how to play this record from start to finish.
For example, it is impossible for a human to play the drums heard on this.
For me, this one crushes every record that wants to be called "progressive".
Easily.
