Imo the general trend in Opeth albums is that, they're either really excellent in creating atmosphere but have some boring songs, or they're not as good in creating atmosphere (by Opeth's standards) but create excellent songs throughout.

This album excels in both aspects, in that it presents a convincing conceptual storyline /and/ never gets boring with each song.

BWP I agree, but Still Life i'd pip with the former. This simply gets a nod over BWP because of the conceptual factor

In every tangible way though this is inferior to Still Life. Harmonically, vocally, production wise, sloppier transitions, and much less confident performances from every instrument. I still love this record, but to my ears SL and BWP are head and shoulders above this. I'll agree that this album is very consistently solid though, something that their most recent efforts lack.

i love the concept in this and i'll agree that it has the most (haunting) atmosphere of any Opeth record, this or Deliverance

It's been like 7 years since I bought Still Life, and I'm yet to understand it's appeal, apart from "The Moor" which is in fact a masterpiece. Songs like White Cluster, Serenity Painted Death, and even Moonlapse Vertigo are some of the most boring and dull moments in Opeth history.

I kind of agree with this to an extent (except for White Cluster). The Moor and Godhead's Lament are amazing, and the rest of the tracks are even solid but wholly overrated.

Godhead's Lament's cleans are actually really beautiful, however the rest of the song could be much better.

I find White Cluster one of the best Opeth songs. The last solo and the fading out ending leaves me speechless everytime.

Oh and this is the best Opeth record.
