They brand themselves as progressive sludge, while not really being either particularly progressive nor particularly sludgy and just sitting on that awkward boundary that ends up sounding like it's trying to be a mainstream alternative to both genres. I also find the songwriting incredibly tedious and despite having, what, 4 vocalists(?) they somehow fail to have a single remotely interesting or talented singer. Too many unnecessary drum fills. Oh and incredibly overrated and having a rabid fanbase consisting mostly of hipsters trying to make metal 'cool'.

But mainly just because they're incredibly boring. Yeah, I really dislike them.

I don't get how someone could be bored by leviathan and not bored by this shit

"and having a rabid fanbase consisting mostly of hipsters trying to make metal 'cool'."

I mean by that logic aren't all metal fans hipsters? You meet a lot of hipster Mastodon fans simply because there are a lot of Mastodon fans. They're a mainstream band.

i've definitely noticed more hipsters hating on mastodon than loving them and trying to destroy metal or something

but that's just my experience

At this point hipster is just a meaningless word used to baselessly disparage other people's opinions tbh

Ie only hipsters like this yada yada

i've always used it to refer to pretentious people who base their opinion of music (or anything else) on its popularity rather than the quality of the material on offer

If anyone is trying to be pretentious or listen to unpopular music they wouldn't be listening to either of these bands though

exactly

so the point that mastodon is hipster metal or that their fans are hipsters ruining metal is kind of absurd

Yea exactly. And that's how I see the word get thrown out 90% of the time. That or people saying someone with an unpopular opinion is just trying to be a hipster. It's just a way to call someone's opinion shit without giving any reason why

No when I say hipster I mean they're genuinely part of the subculture, it's a real thing not just a stereotype y'know. As in they're kind of trendy millennial progressive folk who think they're enlightened both politically and musically, wear gay clothes that kind of thing, easy to spot. Honestly this is genuinely most Mastodon fans I've met in real life. They're similar to the stereotypical 'djent' fan, you must have heard djent be called hipster metal before? Or 'blackgaze' stuff like Deafheaven? Either way it basically belongs to bands who try way too hard to be trendy.

i've seen a lot more in djent tbh

and for blackgaze it's not really true, only for deafhaven's sunbather which makes sense because of the sites that picked it up and talked about it

I'm not saying that automatically makes their opinion shit (although most of the time it kinda does) but it's just another reason to hate Mastodon as hipsters should all be neutered. Your hate for some bands must be elevated by their fanbases, no? Panic at the disco? Avenged Sevenfold? Twenty one pilots?
