There are some really refined fan remasters these days, where some decent bass mix is implemented. I would recommend the remaster from 2018 by Frost Media Prod
That aside, Metallica could have been so great after this, if only they had continued the direction that this album was going for

They did in some ways though. There are definitely shades of black album here. The slower parts on AJFA wouldn't sound out of place on the self titled. They just cut out the odd time signatures and the speed

Yeah, that's why size was saying that they didn't go down this album's direction.

See, I don't know. I used to believe in that school of thought, but I think the black album (despite not being one of my favorite Metallica albums) was the right path to go down in the end. As much as I love prog metal and tech-thrash, I don't like the idea of Metallica becoming even more proggy but potentially losing their memorable hooks in the process. Not saying that would have happened, but I feel as though it's a strong possibility

I would have preferred the former. It's not like they have anything resembling a good hook post-Load anyway.

I guess I should have worded that a bit better. I would have liked them being proggier as well, but I feel like there was the potential for their hooks and riffs to become less focused or memorable because of that. Again, who knows what would have actually happened, but yeah

Sure, but a lot of parts on this album sound like they could easily be on the black album. Despite the fact that AJFA is probably their proggiest record, it's the first one that showcases some of the buttrock sound you have on the black album

I'd argue that songs like Escape already preceded the buttrock aspect before this record. I see your argument though Koris, but the Black album just wasn't for me

The chorus for the title track comes to mind maybe, although I ain't listened to this one in years.

That's mostly James' vocals. Otherwise, it's kind of building on what The Thing That Should Not Be does, albeit with a more protest vibe to it than the former.
