"i got made fun of years ago for suggesting "enter sandman" and "sad but true" were groove metal and fairly pantera-esque."

There's even some doom metal-inspired stuff in there with songs like My Friend of Misery and The God That Failed as well

Confirmed. I had to throw out all my My Dying Bride albums after hearing the black album.

easily the best metallica album. starts slow and boring but picks up with eye, then leads into their best and only good slow song in One. shortest straw is a great song but the concept is retarded and bellowing 'shortest straw' is about the least metal thing one could do. despite that hetfield's vocals throughout this album actually fit the music and are certainly the best he's ever done. after straw the rest of the songs keep up the general thrashy momentum but nothing too memorable. ironically despite this being their best overall album there isn't a song on it I would listen to in real time with the possible exception of One.

Been listening to One quite a bit recently - I remember discovering the music video for it when I was 14 and being obsessed haha

So sick of One I can't remember the last time I listened to it. Always giving Blackened and Dyers Eve a rip though that's for sure

If it were on here it would be at least 8 minutes long and have no bass at all

It's really well done and creative for sure. It has the Justice production, the Justice guitar tone, the Justice drum tone and style...
