I always thought the remastered version sounded exactly the same as the original
Nice rec

The remaster sounds the same and some of the transitions get ruined. Time is added between some of the tracks and there's a fade in and out between In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion and Odal instead of continuous noise like the original album
Probably the worst offence is the transition from The Hawthorne Passage to ...And the Great Cold Death of the Earth. It was an awesome, sudden, jarring transition in the original but now there's just awkward silence between the tracks. It's super bad.
So yeah, listen to the original if you can.

That being said, the Pale Folklore remaster is perfect and exactly what that album needed. I'd say that remaster is essential but the remasters of this and Ashes are unnecessary and should be avoided.

This and Ashes are fine in terms of production and mixing. Agreed about the PF remaster too, that was needed for sure. It still retains the raw organic feel too thankfully, not too polished or anything.

Looks like I lucked out! I couldn't get my hands on the vinyl remaster, but I was able to track down the original vinyl. I did get the Pale Folklore remaster on vinyl though.
Double win!

It's funny how a lot of remasters are total shit despite having "master" in it. You think it would "master" the sound but nah they fuck it up. That really grinds my gears.

Cough megadeth cough

Exactly what I was thinking. The KIMB remaster is arguably the least offensive, but they all suck. Not just Megadeth though.

Probably to make up for Megadeth never making it to number one on the Billboard Hot 200. lol

Not at all. The original PF was extremely muffled and muddy. The remaster cleans it up as much as a remaster possibly could, adding more punch and eliminating the muddiness pretty damn well. What it really needed was a remix (maybe even a re-recording for certain parts) but the remaster is about as good as anyone could have expected. IMO it's the definitive version of the album.
