I like this convo. And I like most of this album, but it's never been their best for me. The Moor, Where Cluster and Godhead's Lament though, amazing tracks.

I heard it's more of girth than length. Is that true?

Okay I finally did it, against all my instincts I revisited this for the first time after my initial doubts had started to surface. Unfortunately those doubts were indeed accurate.

The Moor, Godhead's Lament and White Cluster all are top-tier Opeth, Benighted and Serenity Painted Death are 2nd tier Opeth. The remaining two don't quite hit home like they used to, perhaps it was a product of being blinded by how incredible the opening 25 (or so) minutes are, or the anticipation of the closing duo? I've always been someone who prefers to evaluate music by it's peaks as opposed to it's troughs (no really), so I can see how it perhaps passed me by before. This and BWP were the first Opeth albums I listened to, so the initial 'best band ever' feeling still gets conjured up every time I start playing The Moor, that whole opening segment leading up to when those growls kick in is still a religious experience.

I also have these weird issues with the production / mixing where the volume is either too quiet to be satisfying, or blatantly too loud to be comfortable. I can't listen to the album from start to finish without playing around with the volume control. I don't remember this ever being an issue before, which is odd.

Opeth records on spotify suck major ass. Like you legit can't hear some of the riffs distinctly enough and the whole thing turns into a disastrous mishmash.

Try listening to CD or lossless, seriously. It doesn't matter with a lot of things, but with Opeth it really means a world of difference

Demon I love you! This is exactly what I feel about these tracks.
