because it was underground and non-mainstream for a long time
and lets face it your average person hasn't heard of neutral milk hotel and that gives all hipsters a massive hard on. that combined with the thematic values of the album (turn of the century shit), the musical stylings (beatles worship meets bob dylan worship), it's pretty much a hipster magnet lol
but that wasn't jeff's intention, i think..it just kinda happened that way
