In Italy it's called salame i think. Although italians have lots of varieties of salame and most western cultures just eat the one type on all pizzas.

Don't get me wrong I adore traditional Italian Pizza and in many ways it's defo the best.

Pepperoni looks a lot like the spicy salame we often put on pizza, but if I'm not mistaken it's actually sweet? That plus the fact that "peperoni" with a single P literally means "bell peppers" to us gave a certain "weird" aura to our image of pepperoni haha
