Fireproof is just so on the nose. both in tone and lyrics. one of their worst songs lyrically probably

Heavenfaced bad. Fireproof good. (2)
Probably
|

Heavenfaced >>> I Need My Girl >>>>> Fireproof
the track's extra and mawkish for sure, but at least shoots for the emotional territory the other two are too anaemic to dream of

those are the 3 tracks that could probably be cut but I Need My Girl is pretty good. I feel like they lean into that sound more nowadays but don't do it as well

Album's only real "weak points" are 'Fireproof' and 'I Need My Girl', and they're not even "bad songs" per se, not at all, they only sound a bit misplaced/slight in the context of this album; 'Fireproof' is a wee lil' popcorn fart unfortunately saddled right between two masterpieces and Í Need My Girl' is forcefully poppy in a way the rest of this album absolutely is not - it feels almost antithetical in that way (this could also be a side effect of overexposure). No slogs on the entire disc, though, and the bookends are absolutely perfect. What a record.

'Fireproof' has always been ok in the pacing for me, a bit like 'Squalor Victoria' is.
I'm in agreement though, nary a misstep to report.

This is where they started to slip
Alligator, Boxer and High Violet are their perfect albums
|
| |
Yeeeeap, that's all you really need tbh. They have solid tracks outside of those albums but are way more inconsistent overall. That five-album run, however, is legendary.

Yep absolutely. Killer stuff.

'This is where they started to slip'
How can that be, when this is in fact the single greatest thing they've ever created ?

Sad Songs is worth checking out, inconsistent though
