Jamie get the American collection of folk music, a five record set, you will hear almost exact duplicates of songs he released as late a Another Side. With somewhat rewritten lyrics of the songs, He is my favorite artist, but that does not mean that he invented anything, I went back to the originals to hear his influences that he said he had, he did write great songs, but used many of these early songs as a template , he was know as a Guthrie prodogy, and most stuff pre 62 is all Guthrie covers, doesnt mean anything other than he used the songs to get his lyrics out, as of 65 he had all original lyrics and many original scores to those lyrics, but many are still like older songs

I'm well aware of all of that and I'm definitely not denying that he had his influences, SirLord lol.

The point is that it was his lyrics that made him innovative and original in his early days, not in every song granted but every album after his debut during his early days had something that was new and that hadn't been heard before in terms of lyrical content.

Yeah, I agree on that, the anglo world hadn't seen that kind of lyrics at the time

couldn't agree more Jamie, like I said love Dylan, fave artist, it took me awhile after going back and hearing the early turn of the century originals to get over the fact that he did it just like all other bands, but his lyriacal changes and orginal pieces make him the best of the best of songwriters

It's interesting that some people even credit him for playing a part in influencing rap music due to his socially relevant lyricism and occasional quick-fire rap-like delivery of rhyming verses which were similarly structured to those heard in hip-hop many years later.

It's not like he was the first to brought up the social criticism to musical lyrics though, but he certainly was a central piece on its construction on anglo music and on its spread around the masses

people also credit Baby Your A Rich Man as well, pretty sure Grandmaster Flash and the late 70's NY rappers where taking more from Funk artist than the Beatles

Yeah I don't really buy it personally (Dylan directly influencing rap that is) but looking back you can hear how songs like Subterranean Homesick Blues and It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) might or at least could have played a part.

I think it was partly the fact that he became seen by his audience as a prophet with a guitar that made him lyrically so much more innovative than anyone else in popular music around at the time (or since).

It was related to his "protest song" label that was specially on his second album if I'm not wrong (haven't heard Dylan in ages tbh), he took that kind of lyrics from latin artists as far as I'm concerned and brought it up to an american audience just like Joan Baez, years later however he definitely built a more unique sound, with the same style of lyrics but with different music that made him sound different from his earlier influences

True, but like this is probably the most overbumped page to a point where no one has even been talking about Floyd on here for like a page and it's still getting bumped.

Especially since I never see Dylan pages getting bumped and that'd be refreshing or something or another...

Ironically I'm bumping this page too lol

actually thought he brought it from slave testimonials and working /mountain songs, about how hard life was, tried to get away from it pretty fast after people started calling him god, liked the more of the post 64 stuff anyway 65-70 dylan is God like though minus Nashville Skyline, which I thought was his first bad on purpose album

In part yeah, but some of his biggest influences were Victor Jara and Violeta Parra, he even did a whole concert in honor to Jara

It was his second album where his songs first got that label, although his third album is definitely his most consistently political and protest dominated album. I personally think some of his later political/social commentary themed tracks are where he really came into his own (such as It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) from Bringing It All Back Home).

And yes Dylan took a huge step by bringing that kind of lyricism not only to an American audience but crucially it into popular music.
