"I actually only discovered these guys early this year (Feb, I think) but loved most of their stuff so I changed my username to honour them, also I sound more metal now :-). This is the first year I've predominantly listened to metal, so thought it was fitting as Opeth were a major part in the change in direction."
A bad change in direction tbqh

Eh it's important to be at home in many genres at once, but metal is one I'd recommend to any music fan to some degree due to how uncompromising it can be and because it has a lot of stunningly consistent bands. So no, not a bad change in direction. It just shouldn't be seen as all there is because beneath the best 1% of it there's mostly more of the same.

I still listen to other stuff but because there's so much out there to explore I've been expanding my horizons on the metal front (mainly) this year. My high level of enjoyment from the small amount I'd heard was completely disproportionate to the amount of listening I was doing within said genre.

And it's such a ridiculously versatile genre that it's taking a while just to touch the surface & explore the most well renowned stuff.

Yeah, I said 1% but that 1% is still more than enough to keep you busy for years.

Are we talking about Opeth changing from one of the most interesting and innovative bands of their time to a meh 70's prog rock cover band? Because if so then bad change [4]

No it was a bad change in musical taste direction for Demon because he's mostly checked metal this past year so I said it was a bad change

It was passable, but there is nothing on that record that demands a full listen like Heritage.

It has its moments and is well-written but the least spectacular Opeth album as a whole for sure.
