This album is a Radiohead-like departure from being an awesome band to becoming "artists" and boring me

Slipping Husband is better than at least half of Alligator.

waaaaat how. idk i mean they do have pretty different sounds i guess. i can see how you'd go for that lush brightness of Slipping Husband

"from being an awesome band to becoming "artists" and boring me"

they got a little more elegant and grandiose, yeah. but not boring

no, not boring

but it's like a singular aesthetic rather than an album constructed of songs

I personally just don't find it as engaging but I know how loved they are soooo

nah, you're right there. it's so beautiful tho. and the songs are still pretty distinct despite such a singular aesthetic. Terrible Love crashes, Sorrow wallows, Little Faith explodes, Bloodbuzz swells, etc.

of course that might just be me associating random words with my personal memories of the songs lool

hey the lyrics are still brilliant tho

"Arent they due for a new album?"

Yeah last i heard they have a few songs done, they all have working titles named after the cities they wrote em in or something haha save for "Checking Out," which i've only heard a live version of, but it was sweet

the word-play is probably my favorite aspect of The National

...it gets buried under the weight of these layered arrangements in the newer material imo

not like it isn't audible, just that it supports the aethetic rather than being a unique feature

you definitely got a point there. idk if we'll ever hear another Abel, All the Wine, or Mr. November. or Apartment Story, even

Likewise I don't see how Alligator is better than this. Boxer maybe, but this is solidly my favorite National album.
