It doesn't seem that out of left field to me to suggest that I primarily view music through a cathartic / emotive lens. Usually my super high ratings are reserved to stuff that had a profound emotional impact on me.

truth be told i feel the barrier to entry when it comes to properly appreciating older material is trying to reconcile that for some reason vocalists weren't really using the timbre I find most emotional catharsis out of back then. and that the production, guitar tones, etc. just sound so lacking in impact.
