I just remember being in 7th grade and reading the iTunes reviews for this album all the time and being bummed because everybody seemed to hate it. I held off on buying it for so long because I was sure it would be bad but A Man Alone made it worth the purchase on its own.

yeah i was reading the reviews on wikipedia earlier today and its strange how divisive this album was. listening to it now, and having not heard Finch's debut, its sort of baffling. this is a very typical post-hardcore record for the time. its got some great catchy choruses, breakdowns and screamed vocals, slight math rock influence. nothing too experimental but also just different enough to not be super generic.

also had to laugh at this 'JR of IGN bluntly referred to it as "one of the most criminally inaccessible albums in recent memory." As a Finch fan, he felt "alienated and hoodwinked" by this "poorly-constructed, terribly-written record."

it what world is this criminally inaccessible? lol

ya reading back to the reception this got at the time was pretty baffling to me when i got into this. i think the debut puts it into context a bit bc that shit is pretty much a pop punk album but it was still quite overstated

WIITB fans couldn't accept that bands grow and mature and try different things. I guess I understand why people didn't like this one, took me time to get into myself.

It's well-documented in this thread that I prefer WIITB over this but I think the divisive reviews were because this album is so different to it. WIITB was described as "Fisher Price My First Post-Hardcore Album" and I think it's pretty accurate. There are some fantastic screaming sections on it but most of the album is Nate singing with either pop punk or heavy guitars.

Then this pops up as their next release and suddenly it's dark as hell with Nate going psycho on half the songs and somewhat unconventional choruses and melodies. There are definitely weird songs on here. I think a lot of people were expecting something closer to WIITB 2.0.

Their debut is the most generic post-hardcore shit ever. Their fanbase was on some weenie hut shit, wanting more of that and then got whooped with Roderick Usher and couldn't handle it.

Not for 2002 it wasn't. That album was probably one of the most influential in the scene during that time.

"Title track is all you need from that alb really lol"

Take it back right now.

Second half of that song is wonderful but I don't care for the first. Then leading into Reduced to Teeth I forgot how good the song is until the choruses. It's how I feel about half the album. :/
