Vocal mix in the opener is LOUD for all that reverb. Sounds better in the Nebraska song though

I think that’s kind of an intentional effect on the opener, I dig that super washed out guitar sound there.

Hmmm okay maybe

Am enjoying how after all that talk of LDR, House in Nebraska is straight Speak Now-era Taylor Swift

Not sure I'm feeling the stakes on this so far (ed. okay yikes, Hard Times is putting in some legwork to that end)

Surely you mean American Teenager not Nebraska with the Taylor Swift comparison?

And yeah you’re still in Act 1 baby, the proverbial stakes will raise soon.

You will never understand stakes until you rediscover how it feels to invest yourself in something :]

To which end, we're getting there and going places. Was Ptolemaea the track people were comparing with Chelsea Wolfe? Feels like a much more mature take on her Abyss sound, good track

And nope, Nebraska is definitely the more Taylor of the two. Similar storytelling style too. American Teenager felt pretty whatever in its pop tropes, didn't care to parse it

Interesting, I’m not invested in older Swift beyond singles but if she has stuff like “A House In Nebraska” maybe I’m missing out more than I thought. Will say that while I initially opposed people who said there was country in this (aside from the ones that obviously have it like “Thoroughfare”) I am starting to see how that or ~Northern American Music~ (to use the RYM term) more broadly are an influence here and is probably a big piece of why I click with this so hard.

“American Teenager” is tropey I guess but not distractingly so, it’s the album’s big Pop song and its lyrics, melody, and chorus are all on point so I don’t knock it for that.

And yes “Ptolemaea” is the Wolfe-likened one.

I hear americana in most of these tracks, and I feel it's hard to get through the lyrics without picking up on her engagement with those kinds of writing traditions (which I'm sure is old news for you)

This is wrapping up and I'm not sure how I feel or am supposed to be feeling hm

The lyrics are 100% Americana/Southern Gothic, it just took more time for me to hear it in the music outside of the most obvious points. That wasn’t really present in her earlier work so I didn’t catch it here immediately.

I do find this conversation and the T swift comparisons interesting because I so feel like this is a much better and interesting version of what people try to sell folklore and evermore as. An expansive and somewhat experimental take on folk pop that draws inspiration from classic “American” music styles. All of the hyperbole that I saw attached to those albums (which I enjoy) is this. Would be interested in reactions towards this from Swifties tbh

Can I say as someone that likes Speak Now and a good bunch of Tay Tay singles that this is great and Folklore / Evermore are both some of the most soulless think-tank “grown-up artist now” baiting bullshit I’ve ever heard?

I listened to this album two times in a row the first time I listened to this and remember nothing but Taylor swift sounding song and then scat in a Chelsea Wolfe sounding song I hate the mix so much but maybe I like the album like there must have been a reason I listened to two hours of this

You can and should and they are drab and should be mostly forgotten forever. Hellfire for Dessner, Antonoff and Vernon; a wardrobe change and bottle of gin for Taylor
Should stress that the Speak Now comparison was mostly a compliment. Lot of pockets of magic on that album
