I don’t think this is all that much more “metal” than usual for Converge tho

This is an interesting thread. Embarrassing but also interesting. Whichever side you ultimately lie on will determine your place in Sputnik folklore.

I think this drags a bit in spots and my rating is probably slightly inflated as usual but I'm a huge fan of this direction after decades of them basically making the same album

Being a much bigger converge fan than Chelsea Wolfe, this feels a bit slow and not enough chaos than I'm used to. It's good but I have to view it entirely different if I'm to be unbiased in my rating. Not sure where it sits at for me yet

Hang on, you’re not being biased in your rating? Are you sure this is the right place for you? I think it’s best to judge all music on pre-conceptions and what you want, rather than what it is.

I don’t know Chelsea Wolfe music but I enjoy any of the guest singers cradle of filth or in flames ever have had more than what she does here. I love female cleans in metal more than male vocals. This isn’t that good shit.

The first single and Crimson Stone are at least 4.0/5. I can at least say that.

My favorite Chelsea Wolfe release is her acoustic album Unknown Rooms. Not much into any of her other albums. Did see her live once though, and that was awesome.

I think it's gonna take a few years for people to come around to this one.

This is a perfectly sensible direction change at this stage of Converge's existence. It's such a fresh departure from their typical hardcore beatdowns and it seems like a more sustainable long-term approach to make a push into atmospheric territory with a higher percentage of clean vocals. They absolutely nail the atmosphere here IMO, I can't get enough of 'Blood Moon', 'Coil', 'Daimon', and 'Crimson Stone', although the whole thing is very consistent.
